Bluesnooze: a focused utility

Want to stop your sleeping Mac from connecting to Bluetooth accessories, causing it to wake up?

Bluesnooze is a free menu bar app for macOS made by developer Oliver Peate that can help.

With Bluesnooze installed and running on your Mac, it will no longer connect to Bluetooth accessories around it, be it bluetooth headphones, sound bar, mouse, keyboard — anything.

Bluetooth is turned off when your MacBook goes to sleep, and switched on when it wakes up. It’s kind of crazy that macOS doesn’t include a native setting to do something similar to this, isn’t it?

A set and forget offering, Bluesnooze auto-starts at login (but you can turn that it off). If you’re not a fan of menubar clutter there’s an option to hide the icon from menu bar if you’d rather let it run invisibility in the background (but you won’t be able to configure or control it).

There’s also an option to turn off Bluetooth when your Mac shuts down, and turn Bluetooth on when it boots up and the app launches. I can’t really think of a reason why you’d need/want to do this, but it’s there if you can!

Bluesnooze will NOT work if you have the “Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac” feature enabled but since this tool it aimed at MacBooks (i.e. portable devices) chances are that won’t be an issue (after all, your Mac is sleeping).

Download Bluesnooze for macOS

Want to try it out? Well, you can – Bluesnooze is free software designed for macOS Monterey and up.

But because Bluesnooze uses a private API to control Bluetooth, it cannot be added to the Mac App Store.

To use it, you need to download the latest release from the project’s GitHub. The install package is notarized by Apple for peace of mind. A simple uninstaller is included also.

You can also install Bluesnooze from Homebrew (if you have it set-up and configured). Just run brew install bluesnooze from the Terminal app to get going.

If you like Bluesnooze consider throwing the developer a little appreciation (and perhaps some motivation to keep the app updated) by buying them a coffee.
